Biggest Carriers in the United States

20 November 2020

2020 has changed the landscape of the cell phone industry. We have gone from four major telecom carriers in the United States to only three. Now this might not seem like a big change, but it has changed the buying options for customers considerably.  The four major carriers were Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, and Sprint. And in 2011 the Obama administration put a stop to the acquisition of AT&T over T-Mobile. With a bid of $39 billion AT&T would have secured their spot as the largest telecommunications company in the U.S. The FCC and the White House made it clear that it is in the consumers best interest to have 4 major carriers.

Today, Verizon still holds the number one spot with almost 119 million customers. T-Mobile has become the second biggest carrier with 98 million customers and AT&T is right behind T-Mobile with about 93 million customers.

In the prepaid space, Dish Network has entered the telecom world and purchased the previously Sprint owned companies Boost and Virgin Mobile. They are now merged under Boost Mobile.  Dish Wireless has about 9.3 million customers and it only offers prepaid services.  We do not consider them a large player, but they are making a name for themselves on the prepaid market.
